Preparation trade

Plastering and skimming, ready for what comes next

Plastering rarely gets admired, and that is the point. A flat, sound, even wall is what lets tiling and decorating look right.

How we work

Where plastering matters most in a bathroom

When old tiles come off, the wall behind them is usually damaged. Patching it with adhesive and hoping is how lipped, uneven tiling happens.

We reinstate the surface properly, whether that means a patch repair, a full skim or boarding out a wall that has blown, so the next trade starts from something reliable.

Plastering work we carry out

Full room skimming over existing plaster

Patch repairs after tile removal

Plasterboarding and dot and dab to solid walls

Insulated boarding on cold external walls

Reveals, corners and beading made good

Ceilings skimmed after bathroom alterations

Walls prepared to a tiling standard rather than a decorating one

Good to know

Tiling flat and decorating flat are different

A wall can be perfectly acceptable for paint and still be unsuitable for large format tiles, which show a few millimetres of deviation as lipping at every edge.

Because we do both trades, we know which standard your wall needs and finish it to that rather than to a general one.

Common questions

Plastering: your questions answered

How long before plaster can be tiled or painted?

It depends on thickness, ventilation and the season. We will give you a realistic drying time rather than an optimistic one.

Can you plaster a wall that has blown?

Where the render has failed, boarding out is usually more reliable than skimming over it.

Do you take on plastering outside bathrooms?

Yes, whole rooms and repairs elsewhere in the house are regular work for us.

Is plastering included in a full renovation?

Yes, making good the walls is part of our scope rather than an extra you discover later.

Can you insulate a cold bathroom wall?

Yes, insulated boarding during the strip out is one of the most effective fixes for condensation and mould.
