Problem solving

Damp proofing that treats the cause

Painting over mould and tiling over a damp wall both buy you a few months. We would rather find out why it is wet.

How we work

Diagnosis before treatment

Condensation, a plumbing leak, rising damp and penetrating damp all look similar on a decorated wall and need completely different work. Guessing wastes your money twice.

So the first visit is about evidence: where the damp appears, how high, whether it changes with the weather, whether there is salting on the plaster and whether ventilation is doing anything at all.

What we treat

Condensation and black spot mould on cold walls

Penetrating damp on exposed elevations

Rising damp showing a tide mark and salting

Damp caused by failed seals or leaking pipework

Affected plaster removed and replaced with the correct system

Insulated boarding to warm cold surfaces

Ventilation and extraction improved

Good to know

Why timing matters

The cheapest moment to deal with damp is during a bathroom renovation, while the walls are already open and the room is out of use. The most expensive moment is after a new bathroom has been fitted over it.

If we find damp at survey, we will tell you what it will cost to treat before you commit to the rest of the work.

Common questions

Damp Proofing: your questions answered

Is my problem damp or condensation?

Black spots in corners and on cold walls in winter is usually condensation. A tide mark low down with salting points to rising damp.

Will mould resistant paint fix it?

It only slows the symptom. Cold, wet walls will grow mould again through the paint.

Can damp be treated during a bathroom renovation?

That is the ideal time, and much cheaper than revisiting a finished room.

Do you replaster after treatment?

Yes, with the correct system for the treatment used. Replastering with ordinary finish over treated walls causes repeat failures.

How long before the wall can be decorated?

Treated walls need proper drying time. We will give you a realistic period rather than a convenient one.
