Small bathroom ideas that actually work
Layout changes and fittings that gain real space in a small bathroom.
Small bathrooms are the most common room we renovate, particularly in terraces across Salford, Manchester and Middleton. The advice online tends to be decorative. The changes that actually help are structural.
These are the ones we recommend most often, roughly in order of how much difference they make.
Free the floor
Wall hung basins and toilets with concealed cisterns make the floor read as one continuous surface, which is what the eye interprets as space. It needs a frame built in behind the plaster during first fix.
Rethink the door
An inward opening door can consume the only usable standing area in a small bathroom. Rehanging it to open outward, or fitting a sliding door, often gains more than any fitting choice.
Be honest about the bath
If nobody has taken a bath in two years, the bath is furniture. Replacing it with a decent shower area usually transforms how the room works. If a bath is essential, a shorter or space saving shape can free up a surprising amount.
Build storage into the walls
A recessed niche in the shower and a mirrored cabinet set into a stud wall keep everything off the surfaces. Surface clutter is what makes a small room feel cramped more than dimensions do.

Choices that help visually
Larger tiles with fewer grout lines, the same floor tile running under the shower area, and a clear glass screen rather than frosted. None of these gain a centimetre, but together they stop the room looking chopped up.
